1. Which page did you analyze?

My group analyzed the “Apply Now” PageYour Title Goes Here

2. Who are the members of your group?

The first and second columns of students in class.

3. Who is the apparent target audience for your site? Who was it written for?

The appropriate target audience is families (specifically parents) of students enrolling at Highlander. The families are generally lower income.

4. Who should it have been written for?

It is written for the correct audience, however the language could have been more concise.

5. Is the amount of text appropriate? Could it be said more concisely? Would it benefit from additional text?

There are large walls of text on this page which is unnecessary. It is hard to pick out information that is actually important bnecaue there is so much excess text on the page. Additionally, there is text on the page that is unnecessary for an “Apply Now” page such as the section about unenrolling from Highlander Charter.

6. Show how you would rewrite the text.

With help from Notebook LM, this is how I would rewrite the text on this page:

Prompt: Make this text more concise. Only include the necessary information for a parent who is enrolling their child at this charter school.

Enrollment Guide for Highlander Charter School (HCS)

Admission to Highlander Charter School (HCS) is nonselective and determined by a blind lottery process, following Rhode Island Law and RIDE regulations.

1. Application Process

• System: You must use the EnrollRI Common Application via the unified enrollment system launched by the RI Department of Education, EnrollRI.

• Access: The application link is: https://enrollri.org/charter.

• School Selection: Ensure you select the correct school during the application:

    ◦ Highlander Elementary Charter School (for grades PreK – 6)

    ◦ Highlander Secondary Charter School (for grades 7 – 12)

• Requirements: An active mobile phone number and email address are required for the application process.

• Deadlines and Waitlists: Applications must be submitted before the deadline to participate in the lottery (e.g., the deadline for 2024-2025 was 5 pm on Thursday, March 14th, 2024). Applications received after the deadline are placed on the waitlist following the lottery.

• Waitlist Renewal: If your child is on the waiting list for the current academic year (e.g., 2023-2024), you must complete a new application for the following academic year (e.g., 2024-2025), as the waiting list is only valid for one year.

2. Eligibility and Preference Policies

HCS is open to Rhode Island students. The lottery ensures that 75% of admitted students are Providence residents, and 25% are from other Rhode Island cities.

• Age Requirements:

    ◦ Pre-K: Children must be 4 years old by September 1st of the year they start.

    ◦ Kindergarten: Children must be 5 years old by September 1st of the year they start.

• Lottery Preference: Enrollment preference is given to applicants in the following categories, who are admitted first if space is available during the lottery:

    ◦ Siblings: Children who share the same parent, guardian, and/or caregiver, and reside in the same household, whose siblings are already enrolled at Highlander.

    ◦ Children of Employees: Children of full-time Highlander employees who are Rhode Island residents.

• Waitlist Priority: If a waiting list exists, siblings and/or children of employees are placed 1st on the waiting list. If multiple preferred applicants exist for a single grade, a separate lottery is conducted to assign their position on the preferred waiting list.

3. After Acceptance

• Notification: If accepted, you will receive an acceptance letter and a Confirmation and Reservation Form by mail.

• Confirmation Deadline: You have fifteen (15) business days from the postmarked date on the notification letter to return the Confirmation and Reservation Form to the Admissions Office.

• Required Documents (Submitted with the form):

    ◦ Copy of birth certificate

    ◦ Proof of address (current utility bill)

    ◦ Authorization to release school record form

    ◦ Prior school records

    ◦ Special education records such as an IEP and/or 504 (if applicable)

• Failure to Confirm: If the form is not returned by the deadline, the student’s space may be given to the next eligible student on the waiting list. If you will be unavailable at the home address during the notification period, you should contact Highlander to make alternative arrangements.
