Final Project – Excel Data Exploration

Data Exploration

This semester in Digital Communications we dove into Microsoft Excel to learn the basics of the program. We learned a range of different features and fucntions of Excel, all for the purpose of finsing meaningful insigts in large amounts of data.

For my final project I chose to work with a set of data that I had collected myself this semester for my Senior Thesis Capstone Project. My project is called Zoomies, an app for dog owners to help them get their dogs outside more often! I surveyed over 100 people for this project, so I decided to use a portion of the data from my survey for this Excel project. The main goal of the survey was to determine what motivates people to take their dogs outside and exercise them. I asked a few doemographical questions as well to get a bit of a background on respondants and their pups! Lots of the data I collected was qualitative rather than quantitative, becaue it’s hard to measure what motivates a person in a way that is quantitative.

Within my data set, I’ve demonstrated  the Filter function, Chart function, and XLOOKUP function!

Excel Function Highlights

Mastering XLOOKUP

XLOOKUP has been one of the most useful functions with my data set! Since my survey was long and came with a lot of questions, it’s hard to focus in on just a few data sets, but with the XLOOKUP function I’m able to input a demographic like the breed of a dog and see the corresponding repsonse for something about that dog like how often it goes on walks! Above is a demonstartion of me using the XLOOKUP filter to find those pieces of data.

Building Helpful Charts

Charts and graphs allow you to view your data visually to better understand the numbers. In this chart, I wanted to get a better sense of the age range I was looking at. An interesting note from this chart was that out of this portion of data, the majority of respondents had an older dog!

Effective Use of Filters

I’ve used the Filter functions for lots of different needs within my data. One interesting piece of information that I found with the filter function was the a large majority of people who has rescued their dog, rather that getting it from a traditional breeder, had had dogs before meaning this wasn’t thier first dog!
